Background :-
The renewed focus on India’s largest hydropower project is part of the government’s “Act East" policy and its message of development.

Focus on North Eastern States :-
  • Keeping in mind the future geo-economics of the region, the government has been pushing long-pending infrastructure projects.
  • The current government has also substantially increased the budgetary support to the north east.
  • Japan has joined hands with India to aggressively develop infrastructure projects in the northeastern states. As part of the strategy that is also being viewed as an attempt to contain China, an India-Japan Coordination Forum for Development of North East has been set up to focus on strategic projects such as connectivity and road network development, electricity and disaster management.

Dibang Multipurpose Project :-
  • The Dibang Multipurpose Project (Dibang MPP) is envisaged as a storage-based hydroelectric project with flood moderation as the key objective.
  • The construction of the Dibang MPP shall prevent the sizeable downstream area from floods.

Features of Dibang Multipurpose Project :-
  • The Project is located on river Dibang, in Lower Dibang Valley District of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The 2880 MW hydropower project will be the largest ever Hydro Electric Project to be constructed in India.
  • At 278 meters, this will be the highest dam in India once completed.
  • Arunachal Pradesh will get 12 per cent free power from the project. One per cent free power will be given in Local Area Development Fund (LADF).
  • The total benefit to Arunachal Pradesh from free power and contribution to the LADF will be ₹26,785 crore over the project life of 40 years.
